Live your Adventure....

In November of 2014 Daryl decided to go to Europe......alone. I was not really on board for his getaway. In fact, I told him it was really poor timing. I had a busy work week and the following week I had some free time but I wanted to spend it painting our kitchen cabinets together. He told me I could start the project without him. You can imagine how well that comment went over! I learned long ago that once Daryl had made up his mind about something there was no stopping him. He had a very part-time job with Delta cleaning planes that gave us the opportunity to fly standby. The problem I saw was this was November 17th, I was worried he could get stranded and not make it back for Thanksgiving. Off he went on his European adventure while the rest of us started in on our project. I seriously have the best family!

While Daryl was away he updated Facebook with his pictures and his travel log. Friends and family were very curious why he was off on a trip alone. I received a few calls and texts wanting to know if "everything was alright" Most of our communication was shared through emailing. I shared the concern that people had with Daryl in an email and this was his response.

"Ha. So many people get worked up. Don't they know that this is more like me than not? Why focus on a negative motive when a positive one will do and is just as likely to be true. I miss you and at times I think I shouldn't have been selfish but then I think of the positive outcomes. Can't wait to go somewhere with you. My backpack is heavier but I have less baggage"

Daryl was able to recharge on his solo time. He really loved to travel. Recently I saw an excel spread sheet he had made keeping track of the different countries he had been to. The total was 21. So many more he wanted see. On one of our trips he expressed how hard it was for him to see elderly people who had a hard time getting around. He told me that he really wanted us to see and do as much as we could while we were still young enough to really enjoy it all. We were able to go on several trips together and it was incredible! Those memories will forever be etched in my mind. We both loved to walk the city seeing and experiencing the sites and the people. Sometimes we got lost but that just added to our adventure. Daryl was great to travel with. He was so patient and fun. Flying standby isn't for everyone, a lot of our friends and family thought we were crazy going to the airport with just a backpack and an idea of where we wanted to go and if that didn't work we went for plan B but that was part of the excitement for us. Our motto was "Let's go make a memory" and we did!

One of Daryl's business colleagues wrote this message about him... "We could always count on you for a travel adventure story. You had a great appreciation for God's many wonders across the world. May you fly with the angels now and continue to serve Him and your family from the other side."

A message that has brought me a lot of comfort. I think about Daryl everyday and wonder what is he doing? Does he think about me and our family? Does his love continue to grow for us? I know mine does for him. Today we celebrate Daryl's birthday! He would have been 55 ...
